Audience reports

These reports provide information who is using Kanopy and how, and are most useful to reference and outreach libraries, as well as those involved in web-based engagement.

Types of reports

  • Countries: this report provides a breakdown of usage by the country the user accessed it from.
  • Operating systems: this report provides a breakdown of usage based on the operating systems the users used to access the resource.
  • Devices: this reports provides a breakdown of usage based on the type of device the users used to access the resource (e.g. tablet, mobile, desktop, etc) as well as identifying which specific device they used (e.g. iPhone, Android, etc.).
  • On/Off Campus: this report provides a breakdown of usage based on what occurred on-campus versus off-campus.. This is currently determined via the URL that was accessed and is therefore not always 100% reliable for the purposes intended (e.g. if your library proxies all links then on-campus access will also come under off-campus).
  • Days of the week: this report provides a breakdown of usage based on day of the week
  • Hours of the day: this report provides a breakdown of usage based on hour of the day in local time for the customer.
  • Referral URLs: this report provides a list of the URLs users were on immediately before accessing the institution's Kanopy website. It is useful for knowing where users were accessing the resource from (e.g. catalog, LMS, library databases page, libguides, etc.). Typically, there will be a "No Referrer" item as the top or most prominent in this report. "No Referrer" contains two primary areas of usage - users who come directly to Kanopy without being referred from another website or source and users that are already on the website and are continuing to browse (i.e. if a user comes via Facebook to your Kanopy website but then clicks on 10 other films, it will log only 1 page source via Facebook and 10 under No Referrer that encapsulates the browsing). To use this report, it is best to ignore the "No Referrer" field altogether and create a % breakdown based on other items to get a promotion or awareness report showing "Total accesses by Different Sources".
  • Search keywords: this report provides a list of the keywords users searched for on the website that led to a successful access of a film. The report does not list all searches, only those that led to a successful result. This report is useful to identify both the top key search terms as well as what types of search terms are most popular for finding what you need (name, title, producer, etc.).
  • Patrons: this report profiles overall usage (number of play credits used) by unique card number, ensuring libraries know how many patrons are using the service and the overall breadth of usage across their community and how that changes over time.
