Whilst usage data alone is incredibly valuable and a reliable indicator of the "value" your users are getting from the resource, libraries always have also relied on subjective feedback from users too beyond just hard usage statistics. Seeing 100 plays on a film is just part of the picture, it is also important to know what those plays were for and how valuable they were to your library.
Whilst your usage data tells you how much your users are using the resource, your engagement data tells you how engaged they are with the resource. These analytics are helpful in answering the questions "how are users using the films and how engaged with the resource are they?"
Historically, to get this subjective feedback from faculty and users, libraries have had to try to solicit it directly via surveys, emails, focus groups or any other methods possible. Now we have some very valuable tools to support and complement much of this feedback that libraries are getting.
Types of reports
The engagement reports include:
1) Summary: this report provides a summary snapshot of the various different engagement metrics. Users can do various things on your Kanopy website to engage with films and provide feedback on them. Some users may even create a personal user profile on the website to provide them with access to the sophisticated engagement tools and start using the website in a much more heightened way beyond just watching films. This data is absolutely private and is always accessible to the user into the future (you can see more information on this in the privacy section)
2) Comments: this report outlines how many users have posted comments on films and lists those comments out. Comments can be posted anonymously by users after watching a film and this provides most importantly, (1) an avenue for users to share their thoughts with others and benefit from other opinions (especially valuable when most of the films on Kanopy are intended to educate and provoke thoughts), as well as (2) valuable feedback to libraries on the true value users are getting from the films (seeing a play on a film is great; even more so when you know it changed the outlook and perspectives of the end user and had a great impact on them)
3) Ratings: this report lists all the films that have been anonymously rated by your users. After watching a film, a user can rate the film from 1 to 5 stars. It is interesting to note the films that generated the most positive ratings from your users, as well as those that were less enjoyed (and this feedback can be interesting to pass through to faculty potentially using these films in courses).
4) Playlists: this report lists all the clips and playlists of films created by your users. Any users can create clips and playlists of films - most typically this feature is used by faculty in curating and editing films for courses. It is incredibly insightful, particularly for identifying the films faculty are using and how they are integrating them into the course curriculum
5) Watchlists: this report lists all of the films that have been added into user "watchlists". Any of your users can create watchlists of their favorite or most valued films. This is a feature often used by faculty to tag films they wish to preview or that they are using in class. It is therefore useful, as with the ratings information, in identifying the most popular and valuable films to your library.
A note on User information
All user data is maintained in the strictly private and you will not have any visibility on your dashboard into the personal information of users. For example, whilst you may be capable of seeing a playlist was created at your institution on your dashboard, you will not know the personal information of who created it.
Also, all user information can be accessed by the user into the future anytime. Even if the user leaves your institution or your institution changes the way it works with Kanopy in the future, the user will always be able to access their user profile and their personal engagement information (playlists, watchlists, etc).
