Do you have captions and transcripts?

All films on Kanopy come with captions and transcripts that are fully ADA compliant in accordance with our accessibility statement. Our films live on the website will fall into one of the following categories:

1) Films with text captions and transcript:

This is the primary format for captions on the website and factors for the vast majority of films on Kanopy. For films with these captions, you will see a small "CC" button on the video player and a button that will permit you to turn on and off the captions at will.

Also, a "Transcript" tab will appear below the film once it starts playing - if you click on any sentence in the transcript it will actually jump ahead and start playing the film where those words are being spoken.

2) Films with burnt-in captions:

This is the secondary format for captions - much rarer and predominantly for certain older foreign language films and silent films where the captions are integrated into the film itself. If you play the movie, you should see the captions appearing on the video as it is played.

If you would prefer for a film with burnt in captions to instead have the interactive captions, please let us know at support@kanopy.com and we can help with this.

3) Films where captions are yet to be uploaded:

A smaller subset of films may not yet have the captions published on them yet in which case you, or any user, can simply place a "captions request" (either at the time of ordering or use). Films absent captions are typically either older titles (and the DVD did not come with captions files that we could use) or films just recently launched and that the team is in the process of captioning (launching over 30 films a day means we will sometimes launch the films whilst the captions are still in development!).

For these films, users will see a button to the right of the film title with a "CC" struck through:

If the user clicks on this feature, they can then place their captions request through a request form:

 

Once a request is received, the user will receive an instant response with a ticket that will allow them to communicate with Kanopy and track the progress of the captions upload. Kanopy will rush process the captions within 48 hours free of charge and notify the user once they are live.
